The archaeology of the Roman period within the study area is dominated by the World Heritage Site of Frontiers of the Roman Empire: Hadrian’s Wall, which is statutorily protected as a Scheduled Monument. The Carlisle Northern Development Route intersects Hadrian’s Wall on the steep escarpment forming the south bank of the river Eden and runs on a roughly north-wesr to south-east alignment at this point.
